It's time for our weekly food exploration in Toronto! This weekend, Honey Bun and I stopped by a newly open Japanese restaurant in Downtown Toronto near Yonge and Dundas - Santouka Hokkaido Ramen.
The decor of the restaurant is rather simple. From table settings to wall decorations were kept to minimal, directing customers to concentrate on the cute plating of these dishes. Each order is served on a tray, if you only look at photographs, they definitely look like miniature clay arts.
This place is definitely a HIT not a miss! We headed to the restaurant right after HB picked me up from work, got there at 6pm, lined up till 6:30; by the time we got a seat, the line was way passed the restaurant's windows, we couldn't even see the end.
HB ordered the 'Shio Ramen Combo' which came with a mini bowl of Ikura Don (upper photo). I ordered the 'Toroniku Ramen' in Shio (lower photo). Toroniku Ramen is their signature ramen which has the toppings served separately. Pork cheek meat is very rare and only 200-300g can be taken from each pig. Toroniku Ramen is limited quantity, first come first serve each day! Both ramens were so good, the soup base was creamy and rich, the pork cheek literally melted in my mouth! It was tender like fatty tuna. If you are looking for real deal ramen in Toronto, this place is highly recommended! In my humble opinion, it is by-far the best ramen hut I have ever been to so far in Toronto.
Don't forget to side order your ajitsuki tamago (soft boiled egg)!
And yes, this place has climate control, I didn't have to sweat and eat at the same time like I experienced in Kinton Ramen.
